Student answer (Band 6.0)

Television entertainment is a core part of our life and it is mostly viewed as harmless. But it can motivate small portion of viewers with pre-existing malicious intentions to violence. Therefore, I would state that both views can be considered to be true.

Television entertainment has been an integral part of our daily life. It caters to various tastes by broadcasting movies, dramas, live sports, documentaries, news etc. Live sports, news and documentaries portray real events happening around us. Whereas, movies and dramas are fictional contents. Most viewers watch fictional contents for entertainment purpose only. While watching these shows, they can forget about their struggles of daily life for a moment and enjoy the story unfolding before them. Movies can be classified in different genres such as crime, action, thriller, comedy, romance, animation etc. Crime and action movies may contain violence and a large portion of viewers find them thrilling and engaging. But the viewers know that these shows are fictional contents and no one was harmed while creating these shows. They only view it as a medium for entertainment.

The moral values of all viewers are not alike. There is a small portion who may have violent intention and harmful motive. But they don't know how to carry out their plan. In this situation, crime movies or dramas can play a vital role by introducing them the ways to execute their scheme. They might get ideas on how to evade law and order and get away with committing a crime. Additionally, if someone has malicious intents towards other but did not know what to do to satisfy his intention, he can gather ideas from violent fictional contents to materialize his plan. Many examples similar to this event can be seen in our society. Additionally, movies and dramas may contain profanity and scenes of morally degrading events. If these contents are produced in mass level and consumed by most viewers, it is highly likely that these actions will be normalized and many people won't view them as socially unacceptable anymore.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You successfully address all parts of the task by discussing both views on fictional television violence and providing your own clear position in the introduction. For instance, you examine how most viewers see it as harmless entertainment and contrast this with the potential risks for individuals with pre-existing violent intentions. However, some ideas remain under-developed. While you mention that crime movies can introduce ways to execute a scheme, this point is not fully extended with specific examples or deep analysis. To reach a higher band, you would need to explore your main points more fully and provide deeper elaboration on how media consumption directly influences societal behavior, rather than relying on general assertions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

Your response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from your introductory stance through the two opposing viewpoints. You make use of paragraphing to separate different themes, dedicating the second paragraph to harmless entertainment and the third to potential risks. Nevertheless, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty. For instance, the transition 'Where as, movies and dramas are fictional contents' uses a fragmented sentence structure, and referencing devices are occasionally repetitive or unclear. To achieve a higher level of cohesion, you should employ a wider and more natural variety of cohesive devices and ensure smoother transitions between sentences and paragraphs without relying on rigid formulas.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You display an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'malicious intentions', 'materialize his plan', and 'morally degrading events'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing throughout the text, such as using 'fictional contents' (uncountable or pluralized incorrectly) and 'produced in mass level' instead of 'produced on a mass scale'. These minor lexical slips do not impede communication, allowing the reader to follow your arguments easily. To move up to a higher band, you would need to use a wider range of sophisticated vocabulary with greater precision, demonstrating a more natural control of word patterns and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout your essay, demonstrating an ability to construct compound and complex ideas, such as in the sentence 'While watching these shows, they can forget about their struggles of daily life for a moment and enjoy the story unfolding before them.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles (e.g., 'evade law and order' instead of 'evade the law'), minor preposition slips, and awkward noun pluralisation, but these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. To reach a higher band, you should aim for a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and refine your control over articles and prepositions.
