Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on fictional television violence and providing a personal opinion, which places the essay in the mid-range. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and under-developed. For instance, while the writer mentions that movies provide a major source of leisure and showcase artistic work, the example provided regarding Akshay Kumar performing stunts is only vaguely linked to the prompt. Similarly, the counterargument concerning the influence on youngsters is briefly stated without deeper exploration of how or why this occurs. A clearer and more extended rationale for both viewpoints, alongside a more consistent and prominent personal stance throughout the body paragraphs, would be necessary to push the response into higher territory.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, demonstrating basic paragraphing skills. There is a logical progression of ideas in that the writer separates the two opposing viewpoints and the proposed solutions into distinct sections. However, cohesion is frequently mechanical and sometimes faulty. The writer relies heavily on basic, repetitive transitional phrases such as 'To elaborate,' 'To explain,' and 'consequently ,' which can feel formulaic rather than naturally integrated. Furthermore, referencing is not always clear, as seen in pronoun usage and abrupt shifts between sentences. To improve cohesiveness, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible variety of cohesive devices and ensure smoother transitions between sentences and paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, providing a limited range that allows the writer to communicate basic points. There are, however, noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling that occasionally cause difficulty or distraction for the reader. Throughout the text, key terms are repeatedly misspelled or misused, such as 'violance' instead of 'violence', 'envourages' instead of 'encourages', and 'beheviour' instead of 'behaviour'. Additionally, phrases like 'Properly prohibit the movies' demonstrate an awkward grasp of word forms and collocations. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to expand their lexical repertoire to include less common items used accurately, pay closer attention to word formation, and eliminate frequent spelling mistakes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing exhibits a very limited range of structures, relying primarily on simple sentences alongside poorly controlled attempts at complex sentence forms. There are frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and word order that can cause difficulty and strain for the reader. Examples include structural issues like 'Whether, violance movies ought to be there not , it is debatable issue' and 'After watch movies , they do actions or crimes which is similar to movies'. Issues with subject-verb agreement, missing articles, incorrect prepositions, and erratic punctuation—such as unnecessary spaces before commas—are persistent throughout the text. To elevate this score, the writer must demonstrate better control over basic sentence patterns and increase the frequency of error-free complex structures.
