Student answer (Band 5.0)

There is a debate whether the fictional violence showed on television is harmless or it encourages violent behaviour. Both views have their merits in my opinion fictional violence portrayed on television encourages many immature and young people violent behaior in real life.

On the one hand, fictional violence portrayed on television is just for entertainment purpose and to attract the audience.

On the other hand, fictional violence significantly affect many immature and young people. Children who often watch the fictional violence content

may sometime harm themselves or any other children playing with them. For example if a child watches fictonal content such as spider man cartoons, he may try to jump from a building as he saw the spiderman fly in television.

In conclusion, although fictional violence showed on television was just for to attract audience and for entertainment purpose, I believe it significantly encourage many immature and young individual to do violence in real life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response addresses the prompt minimally, outlining both views and stating a personal opinion, but the overall development is limited and falls well short of the minimum 250-word requirement. The essay is only 156 words long, which restricts the depth of analysis. While the student attempts to present arguments for both sides and gives a clear stance, the ideas remain underdeveloped and lack sufficient supporting evidence or elaboration. To reach a higher band, the writer must ensure the word count requirement is fully met and extend their ideas with more detailed explanations and fully developed examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The text shows some basic organisation with attempts at paragraphing to separate the introduction, body points, and conclusion. However, overall progression is limited due to the brevity of the response. Cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or sparse, such as repetitive transitions like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. Referencing is generally clear, but the logical flow between sentences could be smoother. To achieve a higher level of coherence and cohesion, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive links and ensure that paragraph structures are fully developed with clear thematic progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling that occasionally affect readability. Examples include spelling and phrasing inaccuracies such as 'showed' instead of 'shown', 'behaior' instead of 'behavior', and 'fictonal' instead of 'fictional'. The range of vocabulary is basic and repetitive, relying heavily on terms provided in the prompt. To improve in this criterion, the writer needs to expand their lexical repertoire by incorporating less common vocabulary, improving control over word forms, and ensuring careful proofreading to eliminate spelling mistakes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside a few faulty attempts at complex constructions. Frequent grammatical errors are present, including issues with verb forms and tense consistency, such as 'fictional violence showed on television was just for to attract audience' and missing articles or pluralisation errors. While basic meaning is usually conveyed, these frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader. To progress to a higher band, the writer should incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence forms with greater accuracy and improve control over basic grammatical agreements and infinitives.
