Student answer (Band 6.5)

There is an extensive debate on whether the televised fictional violence is harmless or encourage violence in real world. While the proponents of the former view consider it just a requirement of the story others believe it to have negative psycho-social impacts. This essay will discuss both views before agreeing with the latter as exaggerated action sequences certainly promote violence in society.

Those who support violence on television argue that a drama or film does not get famous if it fails to cater a larger audience. To do so, it must have action, drama, romance; in short fill every requirement of the plot. Therefore, depicting violent actions is just a segment of a bigger storyline and totally for the sake of entertainment. Even the blood, bruises and deaths shown are fake. The responsibility lies on the audience to not view it more than that which is also put in the disclaimer of almost every piece of entertainment. For example, the movies like Termintor or Jason Bourne will not be accepted by audience if there were no bullets fired, weapons used or people killed.

On the other hand, there are people who oppose violence being telecasted of any fiction genre. They believe that the scripted violent behaviour does not remain stuck just to the screens, but rather it spikes the adrenaline of especially young viewers. The respective age group then wish to copy the televised activites among their peers and publically. It is because, what they see on TV become a part of their psychological space. Such people consider it normal to act violent and mark it a symbol of dominance and bravery. It has led to several crimes around the world. For example, studies have shown that the culprits of knife attacks and those who carry firearms were inspired by their favorite film heroes. Hence, televised violent actions do not remain limited to fiction.

In conclusion, there are differing opnions on depicting fictional violence on screens but I believe it bore a negative impact on pysche of the audience, especially the young viewers and subsequently lead to crimes in society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses both views and gives a clear position: the introduction and conclusion state that fictional violence can encourage harmful behaviour, while the two body paragraphs explain the opposing arguments. Examples such as action films needing violence to attract audiences and young viewers copying screen behaviour support the discussion. This fits the descriptor because the main ideas are extended and relevant. However, some support is broad rather than fully substantiated: the claim that violence has led to “several crimes around the world” and the reference to studies about knife attacks and firearms are not explained or illustrated in detail. Develop one example more specifically and qualify general claims to make the reasoning more convincing and precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear four-paragraph structure, with each body paragraph devoted to one view and a conclusion that restates the writer’s position. Progression is easy to follow, and signposting such as “On the other hand,” “For example,” and “In conclusion” helps readers navigate the argument. This is a logical and coherent organisation. Some linking is a little formulaic, however, and a few references could be more precise: “the respective age group” and “Such people” require readers to infer exactly who is meant. The first body paragraph also moves quickly from plot requirements to audience responsibility. Use more varied transitions and clearer references, and make the relationship between each supporting point explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The response uses an adequate range for the topic, including terms such as “psycho-social impacts,” “scripted violent behaviour,” “adrenaline,” and “symbol of dominance and bravery.” These choices help communicate the argument, and the meaning is generally clear. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “cater a larger audience,” “violence being telecasted of any fiction genre,” and “bore a negative impact on pysche.” There are also spelling errors such as “Termintor,” “activites,” “opnions,” and “pysche.” These slips show that less common vocabulary is attempted but not always controlled. Prefer natural collocations and proofread spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

There is a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a concessive opening (“While the proponents…”) and a conditional construction (“if it fails to cater…”). Most sentences remain understandable, and the argument is not obscured by grammatical errors. Some errors nevertheless occur in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence construction. For example, “whether … violence is harmless or encourage violence” has mismatched verb forms, while “what they see on TV become a part” needs subject–verb agreement. “It has led to several crimes” also has an unclear reference, and the final sentence has problems with verb form and agreement (“it bore… and subsequently lead”). Review agreement and tense consistency, and check that each pronoun has a clear antecedent.
