Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response attempts to summarise the data but struggles to accurately interpret the provided table. The student mentions that there is 'not a single case of serious and slight degree at end of 2007', which is a misinterpretation of the data. Furthermore, the overview is confusing and lacks a clear summary of the main trends. The report of figures is somewhat mechanical and fails to highlight the most significant comparisons effectively. The response ends abruptly, leaving the analysis incomplete. To improve, focus on identifying the most prominent trends—such as the dramatic percentage increases—and ensure that the data reported matches the visual information provided in the table.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression of ideas is weak. The use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'there is'. The transition between the overview and the body paragraphs is disjointed, and the final paragraph is incomplete, which disrupts the flow of the response. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison of data points. Using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would significantly improve the coherence of the writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'degree of injury' are used repeatedly, and there are inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'killing crimes' instead of 'violent crimes' or 'gun and knife crime'. The student attempts to use some statistical terminology, but the phrasing is often awkward. There are also issues with word formation, such as 'little injuries' instead of 'slight injuries'. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and collocations related to data description, such as 'substantial increase', 'fluctuated', or 'remained stable'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but grammatical errors are frequent and occasionally impede clarity. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'injuries occur from' instead of 'injuries resulting from') and sentence fragments. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after commas and incomplete sentences at the end of the text. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar and sentence construction prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on sentence structure and proofreading for basic errors would be beneficial.
