Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response attempts to address the task but fails to provide a clear overview or a logical selection of data. While it mentions fatal, serious, and slight injuries, the analysis is fragmented and lacks a coherent summary of the main trends. The data points cited are often unclear or inaccurate (e.g., '3821' is mentioned without context, and the comparison of percentages is confusing). The response lacks a clear structure to highlight the main features, such as the overall increase in crime or the specific categories that saw the most significant changes. To improve, focus on identifying the most significant trends first and then supporting them with specific, accurately transcribed figures from the table.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the logical progression of ideas is weak. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes inappropriate, such as the repetitive use of 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand' which does not accurately reflect the relationship between the data points. The sentences within paragraphs often feel disconnected, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison of the statistics. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would significantly enhance the flow and readability of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying heavily on the words provided in the prompt. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'highest number of slight injuries' and 'total number of crime statistic was increase rapidly'. The student struggles with collocations, for example, 'people faced by gun and knife' is not natural English. To reach a higher band, the student needs to use a wider range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', 'remained stable', or 'experienced a significant rise', rather than repeating 'increase' or 'number of people'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'there were lowest people'), incorrect verb tenses, and missing articles. Sentence structures are generally simple and often lack the necessary complexity to describe statistical data effectively. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the placement of commas. To improve, the student should focus on basic sentence construction, ensuring that subjects and verbs agree, and practice using more complex structures like relative clauses or passive voice to describe the data more professionally.
