Great Britain - Gun and Knife Crime statistics - 1998-2007
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The table illustrates the proportion of crime happening due to pistols and knives and serious, death-related injuries between 1998 and 2007, and the figure was continuously elevated.
Overall, fatal injuries were highest in 2001, while they were lowest at two years old in 1998 and 2005. Furthermore, the smallest number of serious fractures was in the year of 1999, and the greatest was in 1998. From 2006 to 2007, there were no reported cases of serious or slight fractures. However, in 2004 a large number of slight injuries were reported, and the proportion of these fractures massively rose with time.
Fatal cases were at 95 in the year of 2001, and their ratio rose just 18%, which is the lowest percentage. Slight fractures greatly increased in 2004, and no cases were monitored in 2007, but they were accounted for at a slightly higher rate than the rest of the injuries at 405. In addition, the total number was reported, and the highest was at 3912 in the year of 2006, and their ratio rose at 342.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response attempts to summarize the data but struggles with accuracy and clarity. While it identifies some trends, the interpretation of the data is often confusing or factually incorrect based on the provided table (e.g., claiming 'no reported cases' in 2007 when the table shows figures). The overview is weak and does not clearly highlight the main trends or significant differences between the categories. The reporting of figures is inconsistent, and the connection between the 'percentage increase' and the raw numbers is not clearly explained, leading to a lack of focus on the most important features of the data.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the logical progression of ideas is frequently interrupted by confusing statements and inaccurate data reporting. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Furthermore' and 'However', but they are sometimes used mechanically or to connect ideas that do not follow logically from the previous sentence. The referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the different years and injury types. The overall structure lacks a cohesive flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. There are instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'proportion of crime happening due to pistols' and 'serious fractures' (when the task refers to injuries). The phrase 'at two years old in 1998 and 2005' is nonsensical in this context. While the student attempts to use some academic terminology like 'proportion' and 'monitored', the lack of precision and occasional misuse of terms hinder the clarity of the report. A wider range of vocabulary related to data trends is needed.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'the figure was continuously elevated' and 'their ratio rose just 18%'. Punctuation and sentence construction are often flawed, which occasionally impedes the reader's understanding. For example, the sentence 'In addition, the total number was reported, and the highest was at 3912 in the year of 2006, and their ratio rose at 342' is syntactically confusing. More attention to subject-verb agreement and clear sentence structure is required.
