Student answer (Band 8.0)

The table illustrates the figures for fatal, serious, and slight injuries caused by gun and knife crime in Great Britain between 1998 and 2007. The units are measured in numbers.

Overall, the figures for fatal, serious, and slight injuries increased over the given period. While the numbers of crimes were not very high in 1998 and 1999, by the end of the period all three categories had risen significantly.

In comparison, the figure of fatal injuries started at 49 cases in 1998 and remained almost stable until 2000. After that, it increased gradually and reached 72 cases in 2007, showing an overall rise of 38%. Likewise, the number of serious injuries rose steadily from 242 to 330 over the same period, representing an increase of 36%.

On the other hand, slight injuries were by far the most common throughout the period. The number increased from 1,740 in 1998 to 2,148 in 2007, despite some minor fluctuations. This category also recorded the highest number of injuries during all the years, with an overall increase of 23%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response effectively addresses the task by identifying the main features and trends. You have clearly distinguished between the three categories of injury and provided accurate data points from the table to support your descriptions. The overview is concise and captures the general upward trend across all categories. To reach a higher band, ensure you make more explicit comparisons between the categories beyond just stating they all increased. For instance, you could highlight that while fatal injuries had the highest percentage increase, they remained the lowest in absolute numbers compared to the significantly higher volume of slight injuries.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group information effectively. The progression of ideas is smooth, and you have used a good range of cohesive devices such as 'Likewise', 'On the other hand', and 'while'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different categories of injury. The flow is natural, and the relationship between the sentences is easy to follow, which demonstrates a high level of control over the structure of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information accurately. Terms like 'fluctuations', 'remained almost stable', and 'representing an increase' are used correctly and appropriately for an academic report. The vocabulary is precise enough to describe the data without being repetitive. To improve further, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or synonyms to describe trends, such as 'a marginal rise' or 'a pronounced upward trajectory', which would demonstrate a more flexible and wider lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The writing demonstrates a good command of grammatical structures. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as the concessive clause 'despite some minor fluctuations' and the participial phrase 'showing an overall rise of 38%'. The sentences are generally error-free, and the punctuation is accurate. The control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent throughout the text. There are no significant errors that impede communication, and the overall grammatical quality is strong.
