Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main features of the data, including the categories of injury and the percentage increases. However, the analysis is somewhat inconsistent. For instance, the mention of '194% of serious injuries increased' is phrased awkwardly, and the comparison between years is occasionally confusing, such as the reference to 'the year between 2003-2004'. While the main trends are identified, the report lacks a more analytical approach to comparing the gun and knife crime data as a whole. The overview is present but could be more effectively integrated to highlight the most significant trends across the entire period.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Moreover', and 'In contrast' are used to link ideas. However, some transitions feel mechanical or slightly repetitive. The progression of information is generally clear, but the internal structure of the body paragraphs could be improved to ensure that comparisons between the different injury types are more fluid. Referencing is generally clear, though some sentences are slightly disjointed due to the way data points are presented.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to describe trends and figures. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'tabular schematic' and 'at its peak'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as '162 serious injuries were resulted from' (should be 'resulted from' or 'were caused by') and 'fatal injuries was less as compare to others' (should be 'fewer compared to'). These errors do not impede communication but indicate a need for more precise control over academic terminology.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'slight injuries was at its peak', 'fatal injuries was less') and prepositional usage. While the meaning remains clear, these errors occur frequently enough to prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Punctuation is generally functional, but the control over complex structures is not yet consistent. The writer should focus on ensuring that plural subjects are matched with plural verbs and refining the accuracy of comparative structures.
