Student answer (Band 5.5)

The table classifies the number of victims due to weapons in Great Britain from 1998 to 2007 under three categories: Fatal, Serious and Slight.

From the table we can easily recognize that the rate of crime has been increasing day by day in past 9 years. There were only 864 injuries in total reported in 1998 to 1999 which was increased by large number and reached to 3821 at the start of 2006.

Studying the given information, we can say that the number of fatal injuries has not been constantly increasing or decreasing as we can see that there was 95 number of fatal injuries at the end of 2001 and it again reached to minimum number at the start of 2006 but if we see the percentage, it also increased by 18 percent in past 9 years. Talking about other injuries the number has increased by a lot as it jumped from 162 to 476 in serious case and 653 to 3296 in slight case and in terms of percentage they increased from 194 and 405 percentage respectively.

In conclusion, the weapon enabled crimes to have been increasing day by day from 1998 to 2007 which is 342 in term of percentage.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the data, including the three categories of injury and the overall percentage increase. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. You mention specific figures like '864' and '3821', but the interpretation of the trends is inconsistent. For instance, you describe the fatal injury trend as not 'constantly increasing or decreasing', which is a good observation, but the explanation lacks precision. Furthermore, the summary of the percentage increases is slightly confusing, as you list '194 and 405 percentage' without clearly linking them to the specific categories of serious and slight injuries. To improve, ensure that every figure cited is clearly contextualized and that the overall trends are synthesized more logically.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, which provides a basic structure. However, the flow between ideas is sometimes mechanical. Phrases like 'From the table we can easily recognize' and 'Studying the given information' are somewhat informal and repetitive. The use of cohesive devices is limited; for example, the transition between discussing fatal injuries and the other categories is abrupt. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'in contrast', 'furthermore') to create a more seamless progression of ideas between sentences and paragraphs.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. You rely on basic descriptors such as 'large number', 'increased by a lot', and 'jumped'. These are somewhat informal for an Academic Task 1 report. There are also issues with word choice, such as 'weapon enabled crimes', which is not a standard collocation. To improve, aim to use more precise academic vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'significant surge', 'fluctuated', or 'dramatic rise', and ensure that your terminology for the data categories is used consistently throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally affect clarity. For example, 'which was increased by large number' is grammatically incorrect; it should be 'which increased by a large amount'. There are also issues with article usage and prepositional phrases, such as 'in past 9 years' (should be 'in the past 9 years') and 'in serious case' (should be 'in serious cases'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles.
