Great Britain - Gun and Knife Crime statistics - 1998-2007
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The informative table compares the gun and knife crime statistics from 1998 to 2007. It also shows an overall percentage increase in 2005/06 or 2006/07 compared to 1998/99. It states the seriousness of the injury, starting from fatal, serious and then slight.
Overall, every type of injury saw an increase in their numbers in 2005-06 compared to 1998-99, except for the number of fatal injuries as they remained the same despite fluctuating in the previous years. The data for injuries in 2006-07 only covers fatal injuries and no data is available for the number of serious and slight injuries.
To begin with, the total number of injuries had a steady growth in their numbers, rising from just 864 to 3821 in 8 years. The total percentage increase in injuries was shocking as it was 342%.
On one hand, the number of serious and slight injuries increased drastically over the years. Although they were pretty volatile as their numbers fluctuated and they did not have a steady growth. For instance, despite having an increase every year for serious injuries, it dipped slightly in 2004-05. And for slight injuries, it had a brief decline in 2005-06. Despite all the other numbers increasing dramatically, the number of fatal injuries only increased by 18% compared to that of 194% for serious and 405% for slight injuries. But it is noteworthy to mention that it also fluctuated a lot and it surged to its peak in 2001-02, reaching 95 fatal injuries.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the main trends and provided relevant data points to support your summary. You correctly highlighted the overall increase in injuries and noted the specific data limitations for 2006-07. However, the report could be improved by more precise data selection. For example, you mention the total number of injuries rose to 3821, but it is unclear if this figure represents a specific year or a sum, which is confusing. Additionally, while you mention percentages, you could have integrated the specific figures from the table more effectively to compare the categories (fatal, serious, slight) more clearly throughout the period rather than just at the end.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'On one hand', and 'For instance' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the general overview and the specific data analysis is a bit abrupt. The use of referencing is generally clear, though the connection between the 'total number' and the specific injury categories could be better signposted to ensure the reader follows the progression of your argument without difficulty.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'volatile', 'fluctuated', 'surged', and 'noteworthy'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation; for instance, describing a percentage increase as 'shocking' is too informal for an Academic Task 1 report, which requires a neutral, objective tone. Additionally, phrases like 'steady growth in their numbers' are slightly repetitive. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic collocations and avoiding emotive language, ensuring that your vocabulary remains strictly descriptive and analytical throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'the number of fatal injuries as they remained the same' (where 'as' is used slightly awkwardly) and 'compared to that of 194%'. Punctuation is generally accurate, though some sentences are slightly fragmented. While your control of grammar is good and errors do not impede communication, you should aim for more variety in your complex sentence structures to demonstrate higher proficiency. Ensure that subject-verb agreement is consistently maintained, especially when discussing plural data points.
