Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response fails to provide an effective overview of the data, instead listing figures year-by-year in a repetitive manner. While the task requires selecting and reporting main features, the student merely transcribes data points without identifying trends or making meaningful comparisons between the categories (gun vs. knife) or the degrees of injury. The inclusion of personal opinions about crime and government policy at the end is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 report, which should remain objective and analytical. To improve, focus on grouping data to highlight significant trends, such as the overall increase in injuries, rather than listing every individual year.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay lacks a logical structure. The paragraphs are poorly defined, and the progression of ideas is mechanical, relying on repetitive sentence starters like 'In the year...'. There is a lack of cohesive devices to link ideas; the transition between the data description and the concluding opinion is abrupt and disjointed. The use of 'So' to begin the final paragraph is too informal for an academic report. To improve, use a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'in contrast', 'furthermore') and ensure each paragraph has a clear, distinct purpose, such as an overview, a detailed analysis of trends, and a summary of key comparisons.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'the first one is', 'the second one is', and 'it shows' are used repeatedly, which restricts the range of expression. There are also spelling errors such as 'Teh' instead of 'The' and 'fro' instead of 'for'. The student struggles to use precise terminology to describe statistical trends, relying on basic descriptors like 'increasing'. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to data analysis, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', 'significant rise', or 'proportionate', and ensure accurate spelling throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are issues with article usage ('the great Britain'), subject-verb agreement ('injuries are occured'), and tense consistency. The sentence structures are predominantly simple, with little evidence of complex sentence forms. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around commas and hyphens. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring correct verb tenses when discussing past data, and practicing the use of complex structures like relative clauses or passive voice to describe the data more professionally.
