Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarize the data but fails to clearly distinguish between the raw numbers and the percentage increases provided in the table. The description of the data is often confusing; for example, stating that fatal injuries were 'recorded as 49%' is inaccurate as the table shows percentage increases, not absolute proportions of total injuries. The main features are not clearly highlighted, and the comparison between categories is underdeveloped. The response lacks a clear overview, and the data points selected are often presented in a way that misrepresents the information provided in the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The transition between sentences is often abrupt, and the use of cohesive devices is mechanical or inaccurate. For instance, the phrase 'The all given proportion was going upwards' is awkward and does not effectively link to the previous sentence. Referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the trends being described. The final paragraph is fragmented, with the word 'Overall' standing alone, which disrupts the flow of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The range of vocabulary is limited and repetitive. The student relies on basic terms like 'recorded', 'highest', and 'lowest' throughout the response. There are noticeable errors in word choice, such as using 'proportion' when referring to raw numbers or percentage increases. The phrasing 'it's proportion is increasing' contains a grammatical error (its vs it's) and demonstrates a lack of precision in describing statistical data. To reach a higher band, the student needs to use more varied and precise terminology related to trends and data analysis.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Subject-verb agreement is a consistent issue, such as 'fatal injuries was recorded' and 'The slight injuries was recorded'. There are also issues with sentence structure, including run-on sentences and awkward phrasing like 'which was caused by gun and knife crime and it's proportion is increasing'. While there is an attempt to use complex structures, they are often inaccurate. The student needs to focus on basic sentence construction and subject-verb agreement to improve accuracy.
