Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table provides information about the numerous injuries of fatal, minor and major injuries caused by pistol and knife in Great Britain in between 1998 to 2007 and the rate of each degree over the passage of time.

The table illustrates that fatal injuries were gradually increasing between 1998 to 2002 and then decreasing rate of injuries was observed from 2003 to 2007 which results in the overall increasing percentage of 18%. A dramatic rise of serious injuries was observed from 1198 to 2007, which lead to drastic increase of 194%. The major rise was observed in slight injuries from 653 to 3296 which is way more than the other categories of injuries.

Consequently, minor injuries have the most dramatic rise of 405%. Overall number of injuries have increased with passage pf time which summarize the data as minimum number of injuries of all the categories are 864 and maximum number of injuries are 3821 leading towards the overall percentage of 342%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the data, including the overall trends and the percentage increases. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. For instance, the description of fatal injuries is slightly inaccurate, as the data shows fluctuations rather than a simple increase followed by a decrease. Furthermore, the report lacks a clear overview of the comparative scale between the three categories of injury. While the key figures are mentioned, the analysis would benefit from more precise grouping and a clearer distinction between the categories to better highlight the 'main features' as required by the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into three paragraphs, which is a logical structure for a short report. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Consequently' and 'Overall', but the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. For example, the transition between the description of fatal injuries and the dramatic rise in serious injuries feels abrupt. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes unclear; the phrase 'which is way more than the other categories' is vague and lacks a formal academic tone. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks sophistication. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'numerous injuries of fatal, minor and major injuries' which is repetitive and slightly awkward. The use of 'way more than' is too informal for an Academic Task 1 response. While the student successfully uses terms like 'dramatic rise' and 'drastic increase', the overall lexical control is limited. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on using more precise academic collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that persist throughout the text. For example, 'in between 1998 to 2007' is incorrect (it should be 'between 1998 and 2007'), and 'which results in the overall increasing percentage' contains a tense inconsistency. There are also minor errors such as 'passage pf time' (typo) and '1198' (likely a typo for 1998). While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score.
