Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the data, including the trends for fatal, serious, and slight injuries. However, the analysis is somewhat mechanical and lacks a clear, analytical overview. While you mention the total increase, the description of the data is occasionally confusing, such as the statement that serious and slight injuries 'seemed to be null' in 2007, which is an inaccurate interpretation of the table. To improve, ensure that you group data logically rather than listing figures chronologically, and focus on highlighting the most significant trends and comparisons rather than every individual data point.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the flow between sentences is often disjointed. The use of cohesive devices like 'Nonetheless', 'Additionally', and 'Furthermore' feels somewhat forced and mechanical. The referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when discussing the trends for different injury types. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words more naturally and ensure that each paragraph has a clear central theme that guides the reader through the data logically.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, but there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors. For example, 'medical issues' is not the most precise term for 'injuries' in a crime context, and 'soared rate' or 'inclined rate' are not standard collocations. Phrases like 'tabular database' and 'positing in' are also unnatural. To improve, focus on using more precise terminology related to statistics and trends, such as 'a significant rise', 'a fluctuating trend', or 'a marked increase'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include incorrect verb forms ('were being committed', 'were fluctuated'), missing articles, and awkward phrasing ('95times'). The sentence structure is often repetitive, relying on similar patterns to describe the data. To improve, work on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice, which is essential for describing statistical data. Proofreading for basic errors in tense and word order will also help improve your score.
