Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the data, such as the overall increase in crime and the specific trends for fatal, serious, and slight injuries. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. While you mention the total percentage increase and the individual categories, the reporting of specific data points is occasionally inaccurate or confusingly phrased (e.g., '194% of serious'). To reach a higher band, ensure that data is presented with greater precision and that comparisons between categories are more clearly articulated. The overview is present but lacks a sophisticated synthesis of the trends shown in the table.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organised into paragraphs, but the logical flow is hindered by awkward transitions and repetitive sentence structures. The use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical, such as the repetitive use of 'And we observe' or 'Starts with'. Paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the paragraphs lacks a clear progression of ideas. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect sentences and ideas more naturally, ensuring that the relationship between the data points is clear to the reader.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety expected at higher bands. There are several spelling errors, such as 'fetal' instead of 'fatal', 'knifes' instead of 'knives', and 'incerase'. Additionally, the phrasing is often informal or imprecise, such as 'coming to the incerase rate'. To improve, you should focus on using more academic vocabulary related to data description (e.g., 'witnessed a significant rise', 'accounted for', 'proportionally') and ensure that you are using the correct terminology for the data provided.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede readability. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('The table provide'), incorrect verb tenses ('cases are increased'), and missing articles or prepositions. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas and spacing. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring subject-verb agreement, and proofreading for common errors in tense and word form. Increasing the variety of sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will also help raise your score.
