Great Britain - Gun and Knife Crime statistics - 1998-2007

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The data compares the number of injuries resulting from certain criminal activities across three different categories and reveals the increase in the proportion for each category of injury in Great Britain between 1998 and 2007.

At a glance, it is clear that the offensive activity increased dramatically over the period. In addition, regarding the injury categories, fatal injuries almost remained in the same level, whereas the number of slight injuries rose sharply over the timeframe.

Looking at the table in detail, total 864 injuries were resulting from gun and knife crime in 1998, included 49 fatal injuries, 162 serious injuries, and 653 slight injuries. The figure almost doubled in 2001, to be specific 1877 total injuries, which included more than 1000 slight injuries by that certain criminal offense. However, the figure almost reached 4000 injuries by 2005, included 49 fatal injuries, 476 serious injuries, and 3296 slight injuries.

Regarding the proportion increase for each category, total number of injury increased 342% at the end. The slight injuries increased 405%, whereas the fatal injuries rose only 18% at the end.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the data, including the overall trend and specific comparisons between injury categories. You successfully identified the dramatic increase in total injuries and highlighted the disparity between the growth of slight injuries versus fatal ones. However, the report could be improved by providing a more comprehensive overview of the data points provided in the table. While you mentioned 1998, 2001, and 2005, the final year (2007) is mentioned only in the context of percentage increases rather than the actual figures. To reach a higher band, ensure that all key years are represented with data to provide a complete summary.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information by time and category. The use of cohesive devices such as 'At a glance', 'In addition', and 'However' helps guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the general trends from the specific data points. To improve, ensure that the transition between sentences is smoother; for example, the sentence 'total 864 injuries were resulting from...' lacks an article ('a total of 864 injuries resulted from...'), which slightly disrupts the flow of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'dramatically', 'sharply', and 'proportion'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'offensive activity' (which is slightly unnatural in this context) and 'remained in the same level' (should be 'remained at the same level'). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, these small errors prevent a higher score. Focusing on more precise collocations related to statistical reporting will help elevate your lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'total 864 injuries were resulting from' (should be 'a total of 864 injuries resulted from') and 'included 49 fatal injuries' (should be 'including 49 fatal injuries'). Additionally, there are issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent the response from reaching the 7.0 band. Increasing the variety of error-free complex structures would improve your score.
