Student answer (Band 5.5)

The gun and knife crime have always been a serious issue in Great Britian. Here's some data from 1998 to 2007, reporting the fatal, serious, and slight injuries over this period. The fatal injuries had grown from to 95 in 2001 to 2002, but it went sloghtly down afterwards. It;s been increased by 18% overall, which is alarming. As we discuss the serious ones, the number has increased all the way, from 162 in 1998 to 476 in 2007, the serious injuries has increased by 194%, which is more as compared to fatal but still less than the number of slight injuries. In 19908, the slight injuries were 653, less than the others, but this number didnt stop here. It increased most rapidly resulting in 405% increase. It was around 1500 for most of the years in between. but it jumped to 3424 in 2005, hence decreased very lightly in 2006. Overall stats showed that the 342% increase in all the injuries is alarming and that showed that the crime rate kept increasing.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the data, including the trends for fatal, serious, and slight injuries. However, the overview is weak; it lacks a clear summary of the overall trends and instead focuses on specific data points. The reporting of figures is sometimes inaccurate or confusing, such as the mention of '19908' and the unclear description of the percentage increases. To improve, ensure that the overview highlights the most significant trends (e.g., the dramatic rise in slight injuries compared to the relative stability of fatal ones) rather than just listing numbers. The data selection is generally relevant, but the analysis lacks the precision required for a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is presented as a single block of text, which significantly hinders readability. IELTS Task 1 responses should be structured into clear paragraphs (introduction, overview, and body paragraphs). While there is an attempt to use cohesive devices like 'As we discuss' and 'Overall stats showed', the flow is often mechanical and repetitive. The logical progression is interrupted by the lack of paragraphing, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the three categories of injury. Improving the structure by grouping related information and using clear paragraph breaks is essential for a higher score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety expected at higher levels. There are several instances of informal or imprecise phrasing, such as 'it went sloghtly down' and 'it jumped to'. The use of 'alarming' is repetitive, and there are minor spelling errors like 'Britian' and 'sloghtly'. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more academic collocations and precise verbs to describe trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'surged', or 'remained relatively stable', rather than relying on basic verbs like 'increased' or 'went'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'The gun and knife crime have always been', 'the serious injuries has increased', and 'it;s been increased'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of semicolons and periods. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of errors in subject-verb agreement and tense usage prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would be a significant step forward.
