Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the table, such as the overall trends and the percentage increases. However, the data presentation is inconsistent and contains inaccuracies. For instance, the student mentions '1998 and 1999' as a single data point, which is not clearly supported by the table format. Furthermore, the description of the trends is sometimes confusing, particularly when discussing the percentage increases at the end. To improve, ensure that data points are clearly linked to specific years and that the distinction between raw numbers and percentage changes is maintained throughout the report.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally misused, such as 'Beside' instead of 'Besides' or 'In addition'. The progression of ideas is sometimes disjointed, particularly in the third paragraph where the jump between years and categories feels abrupt. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would enhance the overall flow and logical progression of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are several instances of word-choice errors, such as 'cause from' instead of 'caused by' and 'significate' instead of 'significant'. The student relies on basic verbs like 'increase' and 'jump' repeatedly. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more precise academic vocabulary related to data description, such as 'fluctuated', 'witnessed a surge', or 'remained relatively stable', and pay closer attention to word forms and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('The table illustrate', 'injuries was take place') and incorrect tense usage ('it again start dropping'). While there is an attempt to use complex sentences, these are often marred by errors in structure or punctuation. To improve, the student should focus on basic sentence construction, specifically ensuring subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage when describing past data. Reducing the frequency of these errors is essential for a higher score.
