Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarize the data but fails to provide a clear overview or effectively highlight the main trends. While it mentions fatal, serious, and slight injuries, the data interpretation is often inaccurate or confusing. For instance, the statement that fatal crimes changed with a 'difference of 18' does not clearly relate to the provided statistics. The response lacks a logical selection of key features, and the comparison between categories is underdeveloped. To improve, you should group data logically (e.g., comparing the trends of the three injury types over the decade) and ensure that the figures cited are accurate and clearly linked to the specific years provided in the table.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay lacks a clear structure, with ideas presented in a fragmented manner. Paragraphing is absent, which makes the progression of information difficult to follow. Cohesive devices are used inconsistently or incorrectly, such as the repetitive use of 'while' and 'so' to start sentences, which creates a mechanical feel. Referencing is often unclear, making it difficult for the reader to understand which data points are being compared. To improve, organize your response into distinct paragraphs: an introduction, a clear overview of the main trends, and two body paragraphs focusing on specific data comparisons. Use a wider variety of linking words to connect your ideas more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and often imprecise. Phrases like 'injuries held by' and 'the thing to be notify' are unnatural and indicate a lack of control over collocations. There is also significant repetition of basic terms such as 'number', 'crimes', and 'injuries'. While the response is understandable, the lack of academic vocabulary prevents a higher score. To improve, focus on using more precise terminology related to data description, such as 'fluctuated', 'witnessed a significant rise', or 'remained relatively stable'. Avoid informal phrasing and ensure that your word choices accurately reflect the data presented in the table.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the number total crimes... are 864'), incorrect verb tenses (e.g., 'have ben changing'), and awkward sentence construction. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing commas and incorrect capitalization. The range of structures is limited, relying mostly on simple sentences that lack complexity. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence structures before attempting more complex ones. Pay close attention to verb forms and ensure that your sentences are complete and grammatically sound. Proofreading for common errors like article usage and pluralization will also help.
