Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response provides a clear overview of the main trends, identifying the increase in slight and serious injuries and the decrease in fatal ones. However, the reporting of data is inconsistent and at times inaccurate. For instance, the statement that fatal injuries were 'rising from 49 to 80 in 1998 to 2003' is not fully supported by the data provided in the prompt, and the final paragraph attempts to summarize the percentage increases but does so in a confusing manner that lacks clarity. While the main features are selected, the analysis of the data needs to be more precise to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. For example, the use of 'In terms of' at the start of consecutive paragraphs is repetitive. Furthermore, some sentences are grammatically incomplete or lack logical flow, such as 'In terms of slight injuries which were dramatically climbing', which functions as a fragment rather than a full sentence. Better use of linking words and improved sentence structure would enhance the logical progression of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, but there is a lack of precision and some awkward word choices. Phrases like 'surging of total injuries' and 'dramtic rise' (spelling error) show an attempt to use varied vocabulary, but the collocations are not always natural. The student relies on basic descriptors like 'climbing' and 'soaring' repeatedly. To improve, the student should focus on using more academic collocations and ensuring that words are used in the correct grammatical context to convey information accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include incorrect verb forms ('fatal injuries were rise'), missing articles, and sentence fragments ('In terms of serious injuries that were gradually soaring...'). Punctuation is also inconsistent. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic sentence construction prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and ensuring every sentence has a clear main verb would be highly beneficial.
