Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response is significantly under-length, failing to meet the 150-word minimum requirement. Furthermore, the task is incomplete, as the writing cuts off abruptly mid-sentence. While the introduction attempts to paraphrase the prompt, the body paragraphs lack sufficient detail and fail to report all the main features of the data provided in the table. The analysis is superficial and does not make the necessary comparisons between the categories of crime or the trends over the decade. To improve, you must ensure you complete the task by covering all data points and providing a full summary that meets the word count requirement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response lacks a clear structure due to its incomplete nature. While there is an attempt at an overview and some basic linking words like 'Moreover' and 'Furthermore' are used, the progression of ideas is severely hampered by the abrupt ending. Paragraphing is not effectively utilized to organize the information logically. To achieve a higher score, you need to ensure that your response is fully developed, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the data, and that you use a wider range of cohesive devices to connect your ideas smoothly throughout the entire report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'the injuries in slight is sharply increase' demonstrate a lack of control over word forms and collocations. There is little evidence of the range of vocabulary required for an Academic Task 1 report, such as precise verbs for describing trends or accurate terminology for statistical data. To improve, focus on learning specific collocations for describing graphs and tables, such as 'a significant rise' or 'a substantial increase,' and ensure you use the correct parts of speech when discussing data trends.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
There are frequent grammatical errors that impede clarity, such as 'the injuries in slight is sharply increase' and 'incident of serious injuries are significantly made up'. The sentence structures are simple and often contain errors in subject-verb agreement and word order. There is no evidence of complex sentence structures. To improve, you should practice basic sentence construction and focus on the correct use of passive voice and noun phrases, which are essential for reporting data in Task 1. Reviewing basic verb tenses and ensuring subject-verb agreement will also help improve your accuracy.
