Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to summarize the data but fails to clearly identify the main trends or make meaningful comparisons. The description of the data is often inaccurate or confusing, such as the claim that 2004-2005 had the highest crime rate with 3912, which does not align clearly with the provided table. The overview is weak and lacks a clear summary of the overall trend. Furthermore, the interpretation of the 2007 data is problematic, as the student suggests a decrease based on incomplete information. The response lacks a clear focus on the key features of the data, leading to an under-developed summary.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression of ideas is frequently disrupted by awkward phrasing and unclear references. While some cohesive devices like 'Overall', 'Furthermore', and 'In contrast' are used, they are often applied mechanically or inappropriately. The transition between sentences is sometimes abrupt, making it difficult for the reader to follow the development of the argument. Paragraphing is present but does not effectively group related information, leading to a disjointed structure that hinders the overall flow of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The range of vocabulary is limited and repetitive. The student relies on basic terms like 'value', 'number', and 'increase' throughout the text. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'the value of crime' instead of 'the incidence of crime' or 'crime rates'. Spelling errors, such as 'Britian' (repeatedly) and 'great britian', further detract from the quality of the writing. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey basic meaning but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex sentence structures, but these are frequently marred by grammatical errors. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the percentage of crime are highest'), missing articles, and incorrect tense usage. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with several instances of missing spaces after commas and periods. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of errors is high enough to cause some difficulty for the reader and prevents the text from achieving a higher score.
