Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to address the task but fails to provide a clear, accurate summary of the data. While it identifies some trends, the reporting of specific figures is often inaccurate or confusing (e.g., stating a 'downfall' after 2005 when the data shows a decline in 2006). The overview is weak and lacks a clear synthesis of the main features. The response struggles to make meaningful comparisons between the categories of injury, focusing instead on a somewhat disjointed chronological description. To improve, ensure that data points are accurately transcribed and that the overview highlights the most significant trends rather than listing minor details.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is hindered by unclear referencing and awkward transitions. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes misused, such as 'firstly' which is not followed by a logical 'secondly'. The connection between sentences is often weak, making it difficult for the reader to follow the development of the argument. Paragraphing is present but the internal structure of the paragraphs lacks cohesion, leading to a disjointed reading experience. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would significantly enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, often relying on basic terms like 'injuries' and 'increased'. There are several instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'says the injuries' instead of 'describes the injuries' or 'downfall' instead of 'decline'. Spelling errors, such as 'Britian' and 'flactuated', also detract from the overall quality. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to convey the data with the precision required for an Academic Task 1 response. Expanding your range to include more varied verbs and nouns related to data trends would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement, article usage, and sentence structure. For example, 'from 1998 it showed a upward trend' should be 'from 1998, there was an upward trend'. Punctuation is inconsistent, with missing spaces after periods and commas. While there is an attempt to use complex structures, these are often faulty, leading to confusion. The control over basic grammar is inconsistent, which impedes the clarity of the information being presented. Focusing on sentence construction and proofreading for basic errors would be highly beneficial.
