Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the score. While the student attempts to identify some data points, the selection of information is disjointed and fails to provide a clear overview of the main trends or meaningful comparisons. The description of the data is confusing, particularly the attempt to explain the figures for 1998-1999 and 2005-2006. Key features, such as the overall percentage increases mentioned in the prompt, are ignored. The response is too brief to adequately address the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay lacks a logical progression of ideas. While there is an attempt at paragraphing, the internal structure of the paragraphs is weak. Cohesive devices are used in a mechanical and often incorrect way, such as the misuse of 'Initially' to introduce a specific data point rather than a chronological trend. The referencing is unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the relationship between the years and the crime statistics provided. The overall flow is disjointed, and the lack of clear transitions between sentences hinders readability.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. The student relies on basic terms like 'amount', 'total', and 'part', which are not precise enough for describing statistical data. There are errors in word choice, such as 'the decrease section is on the fatal', which does not accurately describe the data. The student struggles to use academic collocations appropriate for a report, and the phrasing is often awkward or unnatural. To improve, the student needs to incorporate more precise vocabulary related to trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', or 'remained stable'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'it showed the total... where it rose', and incorrect sentence structures, such as 'the statistic that 1998 until 1999 is the lowest'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after commas and periods. The range of structures is very limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences. The student needs to focus on basic sentence construction and ensure that verbs and nouns are used correctly in context to improve clarity.
