Student answer (Band 7.0)
This table displays information regarding the number of fatal, serious, and slight injuries resulting from gun and knife crime in Great Britain between 1998 and 2007 and the approximate percentage increase for each extent of injury over the years.
Overall, the number of slight injuries remained the highest in all years. This was followed by serious injuries in the same period. The number of fatal injuries remained the lowest in all years compared to the others and also had the least percentage increase.
Furthermore, there was the maximum number of slight injuries in all years, beginning with 653 in the period 1998–1999, which increased continuously and peaked at a figure of 3,424 in 2004–2005 before declining to 3,296 in 2005–2006. It had a percentage increase of 405 percent. This was followed by serious injuries, which showed an increasing trend with an initial number recorded at 162 in the period 1998–1999 and increased continuously, finally recording a number of 476 injuries in the period 2005–2006. It gained an approximate increase of 194 percent, which was second only to the percentage increase of slight injuries.
In contrast, the number of fatal injuries remained the lowest but showed a fluctuating trend throughout the years despite an overall increase. Starting with a figure of 49 injuries in the years 1998–1999, it peaked at 95 in the period 2001–2002 before dipping to 68 in 2003–2004, rising to 77 in the period 2004–2005, declining to 49 in the next year, and finally rising to 58 in the period 2006–2007. It recorded a percentage increase of 18 percent.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully identified the main features of the data and provided a clear overview. The report covers all three categories (fatal, serious, slight) and makes relevant comparisons between them. You have effectively highlighted the trends and included the specific percentage increases as requested. The data is accurately represented, and the structure allows for easy comparison. To reach a higher band, ensure that the 'overview' paragraph captures the most significant trends more concisely, perhaps by grouping the categories that showed similar growth patterns rather than listing them individually. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: the introduction, the overview, and the detailed breakdown of the data. You have used a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'In contrast', and 'This was followed by' to link your sentences and paragraphs effectively. The referencing is clear, and the information flows smoothly from one point to the next. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall readability of the report. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words, which demonstrates a good level of control.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the trends, such as 'peaked', 'declining', 'fluctuating', and 'continuously'. The terminology related to the data (e.g., 'fatal', 'serious', 'slight injuries') is used accurately throughout the text. While the vocabulary is functional and precise, it remains somewhat standard. To achieve a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or varied synonyms to describe the intensity of the changes, such as 'a marginal increase' or 'a sharp escalation'. However, the current range is more than adequate for the task and communication is never impeded.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
Your writing demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You have used subordinate clauses effectively, for example, 'which increased continuously and peaked at a figure of 3,424'. The grammar is generally accurate, with very few errors that do not interfere with meaning. Punctuation is handled well, and the tense usage is consistent with the historical data provided. While the sentence structures are clear and correct, incorporating a wider variety of complex grammatical forms, such as passive voice constructions or more varied participial phrases, would further enhance the sophistication of your writing.
