Student answer (Band 7.0)

The table illustrates the number of people who suffered fatal, serious and slight injuries as a result of gun and knife crime in Great Britain between 1998 and 2007. It also shows the percentage increase in each category over this period.

Overall, it is clear that the number of injuries increased over the period in all three categories. Slight injuries accounted for the largest number of cases, while fatal injuries were the least common. However, the percentage increase was considerably greater for serious and slight injuries than for fatal injuries.

In 1998, the number of people suffering slight injuries was substantially higher than those experiencing serious or fatal injuries. This category also recorded a significant increase by 2007. Serious injuries followed a similar upward trend, although the number of cases remained considerably lower than that of slight injuries.

Fatal injuries were comparatively uncommon throughout the period. Nevertheless, the number of fatal cases also rose between 1998 and 2007. In percentage terms, however, the increase in fatal injuries was smaller than the rises recorded for the other two categories.

Overall, the figures indicate that gun and knife crime became more prevalent in Great Britain during the ten-year period, with slight injuries consistently representing the largest proportion of cases.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the trends and successfully identified the main features, such as the dominance of slight injuries and the varying rates of increase. You have also made relevant comparisons between the categories. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more specific data points from the table (e.g., specific numbers for 1998 and 2007) to support your observations more robustly. Currently, the report is somewhat descriptive in general terms rather than analytical with data, which is essential for a high-scoring Task 1 response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is well-organized with a logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a clear focus, moving from an introduction to an overview, followed by detailed body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'However', 'Nevertheless', and 'In percentage terms' are used effectively to link ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the information flows smoothly. The structure is clear and easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a high band score in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information clearly and precisely. Phrases like 'substantially higher', 'upward trend', and 'comparatively uncommon' demonstrate good control. While the vocabulary is accurate and appropriate for the task, it remains somewhat standard. To achieve a higher band, you could integrate more sophisticated or topic-specific collocations related to statistical reporting, such as 'a marginal rise', 'a pronounced surge', or 'the most significant growth was observed in...'. The current range is adequate but lacks the 'less common' lexical items required for the highest bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The writing displays a good variety of complex structures, such as the use of subordinate clauses ('as a result of', 'while fatal injuries were...') and passive constructions. The grammar is generally accurate, with very few errors. Most sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is handled correctly. The control over sentence structure is strong, allowing for a natural flow of information. There are no significant grammatical issues that impede communication, and the range of structures used is sufficient for a high band score.
