Student answer (Band 5.0)

The table shows that the number of the fatal, serious and slight injuries resulting from gun and knife crime in Great Britain from specific period of year, and the percentage gradually rize for each degree of injury over that specific period from 1998 to 2007.

Overall, the degree of injury in fatal shows the lowest number of serious. slight as well but on the other hand the maximum number of injuries are done by fatal in forth period of interval.

Firstly, in initial period of interval which started from 1998 to 1999, the number of fatal is 49 yearly injuries some are serious and some are slight which are 162 and 653 as well as in total are 864. After that period it sows some increase in yearly injuries as well as fatal, serious and also show up in total from 1999 to 2002.

On the other hand, the table shows a sharp decline from 2002 to 2006. the lowest number of fatal, serious and also in slight are low which are 49, 476 and remaining is 3296 respectively. After that it shows small rize in just fatal not in all things like serious, slight and total as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to summarise the data but struggles to accurately report the main features. The overview is confusing, as it incorrectly states that fatal injuries show the 'lowest number' and misinterprets the data trends. The body paragraphs lack precision, often failing to clearly distinguish between the categories (fatal, serious, slight) or the specific time periods. The description of the data is often vague, such as 'some are serious and some are slight', which does not effectively communicate the actual figures provided in the table. To improve, focus on identifying clear trends and selecting key data points to support your summary rather than listing numbers in a disjointed manner.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as 'on the other hand' used inappropriately to contrast points that do not logically oppose each other. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow which data points are being discussed. The transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is abrupt, and the internal structure of the paragraphs lacks a clear focus, leading to a disjointed reading experience.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. There are several spelling errors, such as 'rize' instead of 'rise' and 'sows' instead of 'shows'. The word choice is often imprecise or inappropriate for an academic report, such as 'done by fatal' or 'in forth period of interval'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to convey the information with the necessary precision required for an IELTS Academic Task 1 response. Expanding your range of reporting verbs and nouns related to data trends would significantly improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement, article usage, and sentence structure. For example, 'the number of the fatal... resulting from gun and knife crime in Great Britain from specific period of year' is grammatically fragmented and unclear. Many sentences are simple or poorly constructed, lacking the complexity required for higher bands. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the misuse of full stops in the middle of sentences. Focus on mastering basic sentence construction before attempting more complex structures.
