The table shows the number of fatal, serious and slight injuries resulting from gun and knife crime in Great Britain from 1998 to 2007 and the percentage increase for each degree of injury over the period.

The table illustrates the number of fatal, serious and slight injuries caused by gun and knife crime in Great Britain between 1998–1999 and 2006–2007, together with the percentage increase in each category over the period.
Overall, the number of injuries increased considerably during the period, with slight injuries showing by far the greatest growth. In contrast, fatal injuries remained relatively low and experienced only a modest increase. The total number of injuries also rose substantially, although figures for serious, slight and total injuries are not provided for 2006–2007.
In 1998–1999, there were 49 fatal injuries, compared with 162 serious injuries. The number of fatal injuries increased steadily to 95 in 2001–2002, before fluctuating and eventually reaching 58 in 2006–2007. Despite these fluctuations, the overall increase in fatal injuries was only 18%. Serious injuries, on the other hand, rose considerably, from 162 to 476, representing an increase of 194%. The figure for serious injuries reached its highest point in 2005–2006.
Slight injuries were considerably more common than the other two categories throughout the period. Their number rose from 653 in 1998–1999 to 1,066 in 2000–2001, and then continued increasing to a peak of 3,424 in 2004–2005. Although this figure fell slightly to 3,296 in 2005–2006, it was still more than four times the initial figure, resulting in an overall increase of 405%. Similarly, the total number of injuries increased from 864 at the beginning of the period to 3,821 in 2005–2006, an overall rise of 342%.
