Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Great Britain - Gun and Knife Crime statistics - 1998-2007
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The table illustrates information about the number of people, who get hurt by gun and knife crimes, in three levels of pain, total and increase in percent in Great Britain between 1998 and 2007.
Overall, it can be clearly seen that the number of victims of gun and knife crimes has increased every year.
Turning to the first main feature, patients, who have terrible injuries, is the lowest proportion in every year which started at 49 persons in [redacted phone] then continuously increased to peak at 95 persons in [redacted phone] and ended at 58 persons in [redacted phone]. Serious hurt started at 162 cases and ended at 476 cases in [redacted phone] ([redacted phone] do not have any information) which is a 194 per cent increase from the start.
Turning to other main features, the number of patients is the highest and has the highest boost of all three levels which started at 653 cases peaked at 3424 cases in [redacted phone] then dropped to end at 3296 in [redacted phone]% development. Moreover, the total of injured persons has a proportion of increase and decrease similar to light hurt.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the task by summarising the main features of the table, covering fatal, serious, and slight injuries resulting from gun and knife crime between 1998 and 2007. However, the interpretation and reporting of the data contain significant confusion. For instance, the student states that serious hurt 'ended at 476 cases in 2005-2006 (2006-2007 do not have any information)' and similarly misinterprets the final data points for slight injuries, confusing years with categories and misstating the final figures. While an overview is provided, key data comparisons are poorly handled due to these inaccuracies. This falls under the Band 5 descriptor where the response addresses the task only partially with limited and sometimes unclear details.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organised into multiple paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs attempting to group the data. Cohesive devices and transition signals are used, such as 'Overall, it can be clearly seen', 'Turning to the first main feature', and 'Moreover'. However, referencing and progression are frequently faulty, leading to confusion. For example, sentences become overly dense and tangled, such as 'ended at 3296 in 2005-2006 405% development.' Paragraphing is attempted, but the logical flow between sentences within the body paragraphs is disrupted by poor data tracking and mechanical transitions. This performance aligns best with Band 5.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student uses a very limited and repetitive vocabulary set to describe statistical trends, frequently relying on awkward phrasing like 'people, who get hurt', 'three levels of pain', and 'light hurt'. While there are attempts to use less common terms like 'proportion', 'development', and 'peak', word choice and collocations are frequently inaccurate or unnatural, such as 'highest boost' and 'Serious hurt'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but vocabulary limitations and unnatural collocations cause some difficulty for the reader and restrict the response to a Band 5 level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses such as 'patients, who have terrible injuries, is the lowest proportion'. However, grammatical control is weak, with frequent errors in subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'patients... is the lowest proportion') and tense/time reference confusion. Punctuation is also problematic, leading to run-on sentences that lack clarity. Although some complex structures are attempted, frequent errors in grammar cause strain for the reader, placing this response firmly in Band 5.
