Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The response attempts to address the prompt by discussing data from the table regarding gun and knife crime in Great Britain from 1998 to 2007. However, the student struggles to accurately report and compare the main features. For instance, the text mentions that the least numbers of fatal crime were in 1999 and 2005-2006, and reports specific figures like 864 and 3821, which contain inaccuracies or misinterpretations of the typical data set for this task. The overview is overly simplistic and relies heavily on personal commentary and opinions, such as calling the statistics 'a thing to be worried about.' Furthermore, the data for different degrees of injury (fatal, serious, slight) is conflated. Therefore, the task achievement is limited, leading to a band 4.5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The essay is divided into short paragraphs, but the logical organisation and overall progression are weak. The text starts with a fragmented introduction ('tis table illustrate...'), and transitions between ideas feel abrupt and mechanical. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or repetitively, such as starting multiple sentences with 'this table' or 'from 1999 to 2007'. Referencing is unclear in places, and the sequencing of information lacks a clear analytical structure. Paragraphing is attempted, but the paragraphs are underdeveloped and fail to guide the reader smoothly through the information. Overall, coherence and cohesion reflect a band 4.0 level.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is basic, repetitive, and restricted. The student frequently reuses simple words like 'crime', 'table', 'years', and 'number'. There are also frequent spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'crimies', 'britian', 'increaswed', and 'significatinely'. The attempt to use less common vocabulary like 'disturbing' or 'percentage' is undermined by poor spelling and inappropriate collocation ('slighty fatal crime'). The lexical range is minimally adequate to convey a basic topic, but errors consistently strain the reader, placing this response at a band 4.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. Most sentences are simple or poorly constructed attempts at complex forms that result in heavy error rates. There are persistent punctuation and capitalization issues, such as starting sentences with lowercase letters ('tis table', 'this table', 'from 1999'). Subject-verb agreement errors are frequent, for example, 'fatal crime have been increased' and 'the largest number of crime are done'. Run-on sentences and comma splices also appear, such as 'the increase % rate in these year is 342% to be exact which is a quite disturbing thing'. Errors frequently distort meaning and impede communication, resulting in a band 4.0.
