Student answer (Band 5.0)

- The table below represents the global comparison of different injuriy degrees, their total and percentage increase resulting from gun and knife crime in great Britain from 1998 to 2007.

the main points summed in here are ; the tremendous increase of these total crimes throughout the mentioned years by 342% which is an alert that raises the biggest safety issue in Britain. Are Britain's streets safe or is it a call of death?

In order to dig deep and analyse furthermore, the results show that from allthree type of injury degrees ; Fatal, Serious and slight. The latest dominate with 405% in the timespan of 9 years alone. It doesn't mean it's safe because the gun and knife crimes are increasing and causing terror, even the slightest bit.

Adding to that, both fatal and serious injury degrees' rates are increasing as well with 18% and 194% respectively.

Fatal injuries having the lowest rate of them all doesn't make it less concerning, on the contrary the total raise is definitely disconcerting that needs a call to action immediately.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to summarise the table, noting the main overall increase of 342% and identifying the largest percentage increase in slight injuries at 405%. However, the student includes personal commentary, rhetorical questions, and emotive language ('Are Britain's streets safe or is it a call of death?', 'terror', 'call to action immediately'), which are entirely inappropriate for an academic task report that requires an objective, neutral summary of data. Furthermore, key data points and specific figures from the prompt are either missing or misrepresented. Because the writer adopts an argumentative, essay-style tone instead of reporting the data factually and objectively, the task response is impaired, fitting the Band 5 descriptor.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The text suffers from significant structural and organizational flaws. Paragraphing is highly irregular and fragmented, with several single-sentence paragraphs (e.g., 'the main points summed in here are...'). Cohesive devices are either misused or awkward, such as 'In order to dig deep and analyse furthermore' and 'Adding to that'. There is a lack of clear overall logical progression because the writing veers into emotional commentary rather than a systematic presentation of statistical data. Referencing and linking between sentences are occasionally faulty and mechanical, making the flow disjointed and difficult to follow, which aligns well with a Band 5 score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student demonstrates a limited and occasionally inaccurate range of vocabulary. Words and phrases are used incorrectly in an academic context, such as 'injuriy degrees' (spelling error and unnatural collocation), 'allthree type', and 'the latest dominate' (intended to mean 'the latter dominate'). While there are attempts to use less common vocabulary like 'disconcerting' and 'tremendous', awkward word choices and frequent errors in spelling and collocation ('total raise' instead of 'total rise') restrict the lexical score to a Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response exhibits a very limited range of grammatical structures with frequent errors. There are punctuation and capitalisation errors at the sentence level (e.g., starting a sentence with a lowercase 'the' in 'the main points summed...'). Sentence boundaries are frequently mishashed or run-on, such as in the clause 'Fatal injuries having the lowest rate of them all doesn't make it less concerning, on the contrary the total raise is definitely disconcerting that needs a call to action immediately.' These persistent errors in grammar, agreement, and punctuation cause noticeable difficulty and strain for the reader, matching the Band 5 descriptors.
