Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the prompt by summarising categories of gun and knife crime in Great Britain from 1998 to 2007. An overview is provided, noting that slight injuries remained the highest and fatal cases the lowest. However, the student struggles significantly with the data. There are numerous inaccuracies and confused data points when reporting specific figures, such as stating that 'in 1998, Total number of lowest cases recorded in the country was 864' and mixing up yearly figures with period ranges. The response tends to over-generalise and lacks precise selection and reporting of the core trends shown in the visual data. This places the response firmly at Band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is divided into four paragraphs, attempting an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. However, the progression of ideas is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions and confusing statements, such as 'Also we had seen that After 2000s total number of Crime Rate increased moderately'. Cohesive devices are either missing or applied mechanically, and referencing between sentences is often unclear. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal logical arrangement within paragraphs is faulty, making it difficult to follow the progression of information. This corresponds to a Band 5 level.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently relying on simple terms like 'number of cases', 'highest', and 'lowest'. There are noticeable word-choice errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'Table broken down into three categories' (missing auxiliary verbs) and 'dramatically increased' instead of a dramatic increase. Less common vocabulary is attempted with limited success and noticeable errors that cause difficulty for the reader. Spelling is generally acceptable, but the overall lexical range is narrow and minimally adequate, fitting the Band 5 descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but many attempts at complexity are faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with tense consistency, article usage, and capitalization (e.g., 'The table illustrated', 'After 2000s', 'we founded that', 'there was a dramatically increased'). Punctuation is also problematic, including run-on sentences and comma splices, such as 'In 1998, Total number of lowest cases recorded in the country was 864, On the other hand we founded that...'. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader, aligning with Band 5.
