Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student successfully covers all main features of the table, presenting an overview and reporting specific data points for fatal, serious, and slight injuries between 1998 and 2007. The main trends and percentage increases are accurately highlighted. For example, the student notes that slight injuries were the highest in number, reaching 3,296, and accurately details the percentage increases (405% for slight, 194% for serious, and 18% for percentage rise of fatal injuries). However, there is a minor omission in temporal reporting, as the table provides data by two-year periods (e.g., 1998-1999), whereas the student occasionally refers to single years (e.g., 2007) without explicitly tying them to the periods. Despite this, the response provides a clear, well-supported summary that meets the requirements of Task 1 well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is organized into logical paragraphs, beginning with an introduction, moving to a clear overall summary, followed by body paragraphs detailing the categories of injuries, and concluding with a summary of percentage increases. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader through the data, such as 'Overall', 'Looking closely into the details', and 'On the other hand'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different categories of information. However, some minor mechanical errors in cohesion occur, such as the abrupt transition in the final sentence and slight repetition in referencing. Overall progression is clear throughout, earning a solid Band 7.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe data trends, utilizing terms such as 'upward trend', 'gradually increased', 'steady throughout the years', and 'sharp increased'. Less common vocabulary and collocations are attempted, such as 'percentage increase' and 'decline'. However, there are noticeable word choice and morphological errors, such as 'numerical count of injuries names fatal', 'occured' (spelling), 'type of inuries followed a rose', and 'sharp increased' instead of 'sharp increase'. These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect limitations that prevent the score from reaching higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses and transitional phrases. There are instances of good control, such as 'However, after that increase this figure decreased steadily throughout the years to 58 in 2006-2007.' However, frequent grammatical and punctuation errors persist throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('The number of slight injuries were the highest', 'serious type of inuries followed a rose'), spelling mistakes ('occured', 'comapred', 'inuries'), and awkward phrasing ('the fatal injuries count was 49'). While these errors rarely impede communication, they demonstrate a lack of consistent accuracy in complex structures.
