Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to address the task by summarising the data provided in the table regarding gun and knife crime in Great Britain from 1998 to 2007. However, the student struggles to accurately report the main trends and figures. For instance, the overview lacks a clear synthesis of the overall patterns, stating instead that the given numbers escalate the percentage of crime over the years without providing precise details. While some specific years like 1998-1999 and 2001-2002 are mentioned, the data points selected are sometimes inaccurate or confused with percentages, such as the claim that 342% was totally occurred. Due to inaccurate data reporting and underdeveloped comparisons, the task is only partially fulfilled, corresponding to a Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is organised into paragraphs, beginning with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. However, the progression of ideas is often unclear and lacks logical flow. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or incorrectly, such as 'To commence with the year' and 'At a same year'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal structure of paragraphs is disjointed, and referencing between sentences is frequently confusing. For instance, the connection between the 2001-2002 data and the subsequent sentences is abrupt and difficult to follow. This level of organisation and cohesion reflects Band 5.0 descriptors, where some overall structure is present but cohesive devices and logical progression are inadequate.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student demonstrates a limited and basic lexical range. There are frequent inappropriate word choices and collocations throughout the text, such as 'tragic, serious and minor injuries outcome' instead of 'outcomes' or 'resulting injuries', and 'filled' instead of 'recorded' or 'reported' (e.g., 'cases were filled'). Furthermore, spelling and word formation errors are noticeable, such as 'esculates' for 'escalates', 'occured' for 'occurred', and 'Surpricingly' for 'Surprisingly'. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the general topic of crime statistics, the frequent lexical errors and lack of precision restrict the score to a Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0 for positive achievement.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The grammatical structures attempted are very limited and heavily flawed. The student relies on basic sentence patterns with frequent attempts at more complex structures that result in severe grammatical errors and ungrammatical strings, such as 'it can be show that, given numbers in table esculates' and 'At least described the percentage from each grade of injury.' Subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, and preposition usage are problematic throughout the text (e.g., 'in United Kingdom', 'At a same year'). Punctuation is also erratic, with unnecessary commas disrupting sentence flow. Because frequent grammatical errors impede communication and obscure the meaning of the data, the performance aligns with a Band 4.0.
