Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The student provides an overview of the main trends and covers all categories of injuries (fatal, serious, and slight) along with the totals. However, there are some data inaccuracies and confusion regarding the years in the body paragraphs. For instance, the student states that slight injuries 'marked 653 in 1998 to 3424 in 2005' and then mentions 2006-2007 when the table actually records data up to 2005-2006 for the percentage increase and lists 2006-2007 with missing figures for serious and slight crimes. Furthermore, the description of serious injuries contains some muddled data referencing. Despite these data interpretation issues, the main features are highlighted and an overview is provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organized into four paragraphs, including an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a brief concluding overview sentence. Logical connectors such as 'Overall', 'While', and 'However' are used to structure the ideas. However, paragraphing and referencing are sometimes faulty; for example, the final concluding sentence is extremely brief and detached. Transitions between sentences can feel slightly mechanical, and the flow is occasionally disrupted by confusing chronological references. Overall, the essay has a coherent structure, but cohesion and logical progression require better management.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'proportional growth', 'fluctuations', and 'surged'. However, there are frequent word choice errors, awkward collocations, and grammatical form issues, such as 'criminal's gun and knife' instead of 'gun and knife crime', 'gradual increase' missing an article, 'the proportional of fatal', and 'reached at 476'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but lexical control is limited, meaning the student operates comfortably around Band 5.5 to 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and introductory dependent clauses (e.g., 'While fatal injuries showed fluctuations'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly missing articles ('gradual increase', 'highest'), incorrect prepositions ('declined at', 'reached at'), and faulty verb forms ('Serious injuries experience', 'numbers experience significant surged'). While these errors do not completely obscure the overall meaning, they occur frequently throughout the text, preventing the score from reaching a Band 6.
