Student answer (Band 6.0)

The illustration depicts the statistics of percentage increase of fatal, serious, and slight degre of injuries caused by gun and knife crime in Great Britain from 1998 to 2007.

Overall, it is evident that there is a substantial growth of crime rates throughout the period, with slight injuries accounting the highest figure, followed by serious degree while fatal injuries have shown slight increase, but has been declining steadily. However, it is considered the lowest contributing factor among others.

In 1998, the total calculation is 864, showing slight injury has the highest value of 653, and rose significantly all over the years, and it is the leading figure than others, reaching 3296 out of 3821 by the year 2006 with the value of 405%.

Subsequently, serious injuries have been growing steadily accounting 194% increase whereas fatal injury has small changes from 49 and reached 95 at its peak during year 2001 to 2002 and has been declining ever since with the value of 18%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The student attempts to summarise the main features of the table, covering the overall trends and quoting some figures. However, there are notable inaccuracies and omissions in data reporting. For instance, the student states that the total for 1998 was 864 and that slight injuries reached 3296 by the year 2006 with a value of 405%, missing the final year of data (2006-2007) entirely. Furthermore, the overall overview is somewhat confused, describing fatal injuries as declining steadily while also citing a final percentage increase of 18%. While the main trends are touched upon, the response falls short of a fully developed overview due to inaccurate data synthesis and incomplete coverage of the timeline provided in the visual prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The text is organized into four paragraphs, providing a logical separation between the introduction, overview, and body details. However, logical progression within sentences is sometimes hindered by awkward phrasing and mechanical cohesion. For example, transitional phrases like 'Subsequently' are used less than accurately to link disparate points about serious and fatal injuries. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'reaching 3296 out of 3821 by the year 2006 with the value of 405%', where the referents for the numerical values become confused. Paragraphing is present, but internal flow requires smoother transitions to achieve a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'substantial growth', 'declining steadily', and 'contributing factor'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and inappropriate word choices, such as 'degre of injuries' (spelling error), 'accounting the highest figure' (missing preposition 'for'), and 'total calculation' instead of 'total figure'. The misuse of terms like 'percentage increase' applied incorrectly to individual yearly statistics restricts the lexical score. While the range is sufficient to convey a general meaning, precision in collocation and word form is lacking.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some attempt at subordination and relative clauses (e.g., 'which the student used...'). However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several errors in tense consistency and prepositions, such as 'accounting 194% increase' (missing 'for a') and 'has been declining ever since with the value of 18%', which misinterprets the data type. Punctuation and capitalization are generally acceptable, but frequent minor errors in grammar occasionally cause the reader to pause, placing this firmly in the band 6 category.
