Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Great Britain - Gun and Knife Crime statistics - 1998-2007
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The degree of injury caused by gun and knife related crimes in the Great Britain over a nine year period from 1998 to 2007 has been consolidated in the table. The table further provides insight on the severity of the injuries inflicted.
The cummulative total number of injuries caused was highest in 2004-5 (3912 injuries) followed by in 2006-7 (3821 injuries). The least amount of weapons induced injury was witnessed in 1998-99, with a total of just 864.
Injuries inflicted by these weapons gradually increased over the initial three years, followed by a particularly shap rise in the next two years, where the injuries increased from a total of 1382 to 1877. Over the next four years there was a continuous increase in total injuries. In 2004-5 the total injuries peaked followed by a slight fall to 3821 injuries in the year 2006-7.
In terms of severity, majority of injuries were mild in nature, this trend has been maintained over the years. The number of fatal injuries was particularly high in 2001-2 (95 injuries) while the least number of fatal injuries was withnessed in 1998-99 and in 2005-6 (49 injuries). The number of ‘serious’ injuries' increased gradually, rising from just 162 initially to 3,296 in 2006–07, representing a substantial increase over the period.
The percentage increase in each individual category from 1998-99 to 2005-6/6-7, is the highest for 'slight' injuries (405%) indicating a substantial rise. Similarly, the increase in cummulative total of all injuries was 342%. 'Fatal' injuries was associated with just 18% increase over the years while 'seious' injuires increased by 194%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student presents a good overview of the data and covers the main features and trends successfully. The response correctly highlights the peak periods, such as 2004-2005 for overall injuries, and makes relevant comparisons regarding the severity of injuries and percentage increases. However, there is a minor data misinterpretation: in the second paragraph, the student mixes up the total and year for 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 (stating the highest total was in 2004-5 and 2006-7, whereas the data shows 3,912 in 2004-2005 and 3,821 in 2005-2006, while 2006-2007 lacks total data in the table). Furthermore, the serious injuries figure cited at the end (3,296) actually corresponds to the slight injuries category in 2005-2006. Despite these data tracking errors, the overall response effectively summarises the main trends and satisfies the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organised into an introduction, body paragraphs dealing with overall totals and trends, severity breakdown, and percentage statistics respectively. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to guide the reader through the data, such as 'The cumulative total', 'Over the next four years', and 'In terms of severity'. Paragraphing is appropriate and separates distinct thematic areas clearly. However, referencing and progression are occasionally hampered by imprecise pronoun use or minor tracking errors. Overall, the essay maintains a clear overall progression throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suitable for an academic task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'cumulative total', 'severity of the injuries inflicted', and 'substantial increase'. There are, however, some spelling and word-choice errors, including 'cummulative', 'shap' instead of sharp, 'withnessed' instead of witnessed, and 'seious' / 'injuires'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the lexical score from reaching the higher bands where greater precision and control are required.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied clause structures ('Injuries inflicted by these weapons gradually increased over the initial three years, followed by...'). There are several grammatical and mechanical errors present, such as 'in the Great Britain' (unnecessary article), 'weapons induced injury' (missing hyphen/modifier agreement), and missing punctuation or incorrect tense blending in places. Nevertheless, the majority of sentences are understandable, and errors only occasionally strain comprehension, placing this firmly in the band 6 category.
