Student answer (Band 6.0)
The visual illustrates the total number of injuries, fatal, serious and slight, resulting from gun and knife crimes across the UK between 1998 and 2007.
Overall, the Great Britain accounted for the highest number of injuries from 2004 to 2005 due to crimes, whereas the number of fatal and serious injuries were considerably low to moderate throughout the period. The number of slight injuries were initially high and experienced a substantial growth during the end of the period.
During 1998 to 1999, 864 injuries were recorded due to the crimes out of which only 49 were fatal and 162 were serious. However, a large number of individuals, 653 were slightly injured.
Throughout the phase, the number of individuals objected to fatal injuries remained below 100 while, the number of serious injuries were considerably high, accounting for 476 injuries from 2005 to 2006.
The majority of people were slightly injured as a result of the crimes, 653 during the first year which dramatically peaked to 3424 from 2005 to 2006 before completely vanishing in the lst year of the period. In contrast, the total number of crimes increased significantly and reached 3912 from 2004 to 2006.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student attempts to summarise the main features of the table, covering the categories of injuries (fatal, serious, slight) and overall trends across the period. An overview is provided, noting the peak period and general trajectory of slight and fatal injuries. However, there are some inaccuracies and misinterpretations of the data. For instance, the student states that the number of injuries from 2004 to 2005 was the highest due to crimes, and later mentions that slight injuries 'completely vanishing in the lst year of the period' when the table actually shows dashes indicating missing data for 2006-2007. Furthermore, the total for 2004-2005 was 3,912, whereas 2005-2006 reached 3,821, and the total peak was actually 3,912 in 2004-2005. Despite these inaccuracies in data reporting, the response addresses the prompt and attempts comparisons, placing it at a Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organised into clear paragraphs, moving from an introduction and overview to body paragraphs detailing specific injury types. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'During 1998 to 1999', 'Throughout the phase', and 'In contrast' are used to structure the text and guide the reader. However, referencing and logical progression are occasionally faulty, such as the abrupt transition regarding the final year data where the student misinterprets the dashes in the table. Paragraphing is present and logically attempted, but overall cohesion feels slightly mechanical at times. This corresponds to a Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary for the task, successfully employing terms such as 'substantive growth', 'dramatically peaked', and 'considerably high'. There are, however, some lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'the Great Britain accounted for' (instead of 'Great Britain accounted for') and 'individuals objected to fatal injuries' (where 'subjected to' or 'who suffered' would be appropriate). Spelling is generally accurate, but word choice in certain phrases is unnatural. This performance aligns with a Band 6.0 descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writing includes a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as subordinate clauses ('while, the number of serious injuries were considerably high'). Grammatical control is generally adequate, but errors persist. For example, subject-verb agreement is faulty in 'the number of fatal and serious injuries were' and 'the number of serious injuries were'. Additionally, punctuation is occasionally misused, such as unnecessary commas separating subjects from verbs. Nevertheless, these errors do not impede communication, supporting a Band 6.0 score.
