Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the prompt by summarising data regarding gun and knife crime injuries in Great Britain from 1998 to 2007. However, there are significant omissions and misinterpretations of the data. For instance, the final row of the table provides the percentage increases, but the student misinterprets these figures throughout the text (e.g., claiming 'only 18%' for fatal injuries when 18% is the percentage increase). Furthermore, the data for 2006-2007 is incomplete in the table for serious and slight injuries, which the student misses or confuses. The overview is overly simplistic, and the overall task response falls short of fully reporting the main features.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The text is divided into paragraphs, attempting an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward referencing and poor linking. Phrases such as 'But,for the next time period it was dramatically decreased' and 'On the other hand, the umber for serioud injuries also rised' demonstrate mechanical and faulty cohesion. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs is weak, making it hard to follow the comparisons clearly.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student displays a limited and repetitive vocabulary, with frequent word-choice errors that detract from the writing. Examples include 'causes little damage', 'disease that caused death', 'minor percetgae', and 'very little illness' to describe knife and gun injuries. Spelling mistakes such as 'Britian', 'percetgae', 'umber', 'serioud', and 'rised' also occur. While the student attempts to use some topic-related vocabulary like 'fatal' and 'percentage', the overall lexical control is basic and inadequate for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response features a limited range of grammatical structures with frequent errors in tense, subject-verb agreement, and voice. Sentences like 'the number of different injuries... in Great Britian comes from crime' and 'The number for disease that caused death increased' demonstrate basic sentence construction issues. There are also frequent punctuation and preposition errors, such as missing commas or awkward phrasing ('in tear 2005-2006'). These errors cause some difficulty for the reader.
