The table shows the number of fatal, serious and slight injuries resulting from gun and knife crime in Great Britain from 1998 to 2007 and the percentage increase for each degree of injury over the period.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The table provides information about the number of people who suffered fatal, serious and slight injuries as a result of gun and knife crimes in Great Britain between 1998 and 2007.

It also shows the percentage increase in each type of injury during this period.

Overall, it is clear that the number of injuries increased significantly over the years. Slight injuries has the biggest rise, whereas fatal injuries had the smallest increase. The total number of cases also grew considerably also there was a small decline towards the end of the period.

In 1998–1999, there were 49 fatal injuries, 162 serious injuries and 653 slight injuries giving a total of 864 cases.

The total increased and reached 1877 in 2001–2002. It then rose further to 2179 in 2002–2003 and peaked at 3912 in 2004–2005. After that, the figure fell slightly to 3821 in 2005–2006.

Regarding the individual categories, fatal injuries increased from 49 to 58, which was an 18% rise. Serious injuries grew from 162 to 476, showing a much larger 194% increase. However, slight injuries experienced the most dramatic growth, rising from 653 to 3,296, an increase of 405%.
