Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to address the task by summarizing the main features of the table, such as identifying the three categories of injury and reporting some figures. However, there are significant inaccuracies in data reporting and interpretation. For example, the student writes that 'serious were 162%', misreading a raw frequency (162) as a percentage. Furthermore, the description of the 2006-2007 data is confused, claiming 'there was only fatal injuries around 58 and no data is available', ignoring the fact that other columns were simply blank in the source table. The overview is weak, stating only that there are three types of injuries and slight injuries were higher, missing broader trends like the overall increase in total crime until the mid-2000s. These data misreadings and incomplete feature selection place the performance at band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is organized into four short paragraphs, attempting an introduction, an overview, and body details. However, logical progression is frequently hindered by awkward phrasing and abrupt transitions. For instance, the transition 'Where every year slight injuries...' is grammatically incomplete and disrupts the flow. Cohesive devices are used in a mechanical or repetitive manner, often beginning sentences with 'Where in...' or 'Looking at the detail'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of information lacks internal cohesion, particularly in the body paragraphs where data points are disjointed. Overall, the arrangement provides some structure but fails to achieve clear, smooth progression, fitting the band 5.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary range is limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic terms like 'dataset', 'injuries', 'crime', and 'increase'. There are noticeable lexical errors and inappropriate word choices, such as 'injuries done from gun and knife crime' instead of 'resulting from' or 'caused by', and confusing counts with percentages (e.g., 'serious were 162%'). Words are sometimes misused in collocation or context, which occasionally causes confusion for the reader. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey a basic topic, the frequent errors and lack of less-common lexical items restrict the score to a band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student uses a mix of simple sentence structures and attempted complex forms, but control over grammar and punctuation is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('fatal injuries are around 49', 'serious were 162') and dangling clause structures ('Where every year slight injuries are more...'). Sentences frequently lack main verbs or are structurally incomplete fragments (e.g., 'Where in 2001-2002 was the peak time...'). These errors are frequent and occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, aligning closely with the band 5.0 descriptors.
