Great Britain - Gun and Knife Crime statistics - 1998-2007
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The number table presents the data of fatal, serious and slight injuries caused by gun and knife crime in Great Britain between 1998 and 2007.
Overall, there is percentage increase in crime rate from 1998 to 2007. The major increase is in cases of slight injuries however there is minor increase in percentage of fatal cases.
If we talk about total cases from 1988 to 2003 there is gradual rise in number but from 2003 to 2005 we can see a major increase in cases number. But after that cases number fall and there is no data from 2006 to 2007.
If we discuss about fatal cases then there number increase from 1998 to 2002. After 2002 there is a fall in number of deaths upto 2004. Moreover, from 2004 to 2007 number of fatal cases fluctuates. Individuals having serious injuries also increase upto from 1998 to 2004 then after a fall in 1 year, there number again rises. Slight injury patients number increases alot upto 2005 and then there is a fall from 2005 to 2006. Information of year 2006 to 2007 is only available for fatal injuries.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of the table, noting the overall percentage increase, the distinction between slight and fatal injuries, and the trend in total cases over the period. However, the student makes several inaccurate claims regarding the data. For instance, the text states 'from 1988 to 2003' instead of 1998, and misinterprets the timeframe of the dataset by mentioning 'no data from 2006 to 2007', whereas the table explicitly shows data for fatal injuries in 2006-2007 (58 cases). Additionally, the analysis of specific injury types lacks precision and overlooks some key data points, such as the peak years. Therefore, the task is addressed only partially, placing this criterion at Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response is organised into multiple paragraphs, attempting an overview followed by detailed body paragraphs. However, the progression of ideas lacks clear structure, and the transitional phrases used (such as 'If we talk about' and 'If we discuss about') are overly informal and conversational, which is inappropriate for an Academic task. Furthermore, referencing is sometimes unclear, and cohesive devices are used mechanically. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal flow of sentences does not build a logical argument smoothly. Overall arrangement shows some organisation, but cohesion is frequently faulty.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with frequent reliance on simple terms like 'cases', 'number', 'increase', and 'fall'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'gradual rise' and 'fluctuates', but word choice and collocation are occasionally awkward, for example, 'cases number' instead of 'number of cases' and 'increases alot'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but the limited range of vocabulary and noticeable inaccuracies mean the lexical resource is minimally adequate for the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but attempts at complex structures often feature grammatical errors. Examples include missing articles and prepositions, subject-verb agreement issues ('there number again rises', 'patient number increases'), and awkward phrasing ('upto from 1998 to 2004'). Punctuation is basic, and frequent grammatical errors cause some difficulty for the reader, although communication is not entirely impeded.
