Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given table shows the number of fatal , serious and slight injuries resulting from gun and knife crime in Great Britain from 1998 to 2007 and the percentage increase for each degree of injury over the period .

The year [redacted phone] saw the least number of total knife and gun crime , totalling upto 864 crimes . From there , however , these crimes saw an increasing trend , with the most number of gun and knife crimes occuring in the year [redacted phone] . These crimes were divided into three sections . namely : Fatal , Serious and Slight . The year [redacted phone] once again , saw the least amount of Slight injuries , adding upto 653 . In a similar manner , Once again , the year [redacted phone] saw the most amount of slight injuries with 3424 people ending up with slight injuries . Coming to the second division , Once again , the year [redacted phone] had the least amount of serious injuries with 162 and for the first time , the year [redacted phone] takes lead with 476. the third divison , and undoubtedly the worst , the year [redacted phone] saw the most amount of fatal injuries with 95 , and on the other hand , the years [redacted phone] and [redacted phone] were unseperable with 49 injuries each .

overall , it can be inferred from the table that the year with the most gun and knife crimes was [redacted phone] closely ahead of the year [redacted phone] by 91 crimes . Although the use of guns and knives on humans ( apart from some forms like self defense )have been made illegal , people seem to take no notice and repeatadly involve in crimes that have irreversible consequences .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the table, including overall totals, category breakdowns (fatal, serious, slight), and the peak years such as 2004-2005. An overview is present in the concluding paragraph. However, the student includes personal commentary and subjective opinions at the end ('people seem to take no notice and repeatadly involve in crimes'), which is inappropriate for an academic task 1 response. Despite this minor digression, the key trends and data points are successfully identified and compared, meeting the requirements for Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a basic structure with an introduction, body details, and an overall summary. However, paragraphing is weak, and the cohesion relies heavily on repetitive mechanical phrases, particularly the phrase 'Once again' used multiple times (e.g., 'In a similar manner, Once again, the year 2004-2005...', 'Coming to the second division, Once again...'). This makes the progression feel laboured rather than naturally linked. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the overall flow could be improved with more varied cohesive devices. This places the response firmly at Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary for the task, successfully referring to 'fatal', 'serious', and 'slight' injuries, as well as 'increasing trend'. However, there are several lexical and spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'totalling upto', 'occuring', 'unseperable' (instead of inseparable), 'divison', and 'repeatadly'. Additionally, the range of vocabulary lacks sophistication, relying on basic terms like 'most amount' instead of higher-level collocation like 'peak figure' or 'highest incidence'. These limitations prevent the score from reaching Band 6.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are punctuation errors (e.g., spaces before commas and periods, such as 'fatal , serious and slight') and a few grammatical slips like 'the most number of gun and knife crimes occuring' (which should be 'greatest number' or 'most crimes occurring'). Subject-verb agreement and preposition use are generally acceptable, but frequent minor mechanics errors and awkward phrasing keep the grammatical score at a Band 6.0.
