Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to cover the main features of the table, noting the highest total year (2004-2005) and the percentage increases over the period. However, there are notable inaccuracies in reading the data; for instance, the student states that the second highest total was in '2005-2007' and confuses the degree of injury categories, referring to 'flight' instead of 'slight'. Furthermore, some data points are misread or poorly synthesised. While an overview is attempted, the lack of precision and misunderstanding of parts of the table prevent the response from achieving a higher band. It satisfies the basic requirements of summarising visual data, but the factual errors in data extraction hold it back.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The text is organised into paragraphs, but the flow and logical progression are frequently disrupted by confusing phrasing and poor logical links. Phrases like 'keeping the record straight' are unnatural and do not serve a cohesive function. The paragraphing is somewhat rudimentary, grouping disparate ideas together without a clear overarching structure. While basic cohesive devices are attempted ('Overall', 'On the other hand', 'whereas'), their mechanical or inaccurate application results in a lack of smooth progression. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparisons being made across the years.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with noticeable errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'Britian' instead of 'Britain', 'recored' instead of 'recorded', and 'percantage'. The student attempts less common vocabulary items like 'percentage increase' and 'degree of injury', but inaccuracies in collocation and word formation—such as referring to 'slight' injuries as 'flight'—cause strain for the reader. The range of vocabulary is limited to what is strictly necessary to describe the table, and lexical control is weak throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences or overly complex, poorly constructed clauses that lead to severe errors. For example, the opening sentence ('The given table illustrates the crime taken place... were causes increase in the...') is grammatically broken and lacks a main verb clause. Frequent errors in tense, preposition usage, and sentence boundaries (e.g., 'rest no crime was recored') impede communication and make parts of the text difficult to parse. Complex structures are attempted but are generally faulty.
