Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the task by summarizing data from the table regarding gun and knife crime in Great Britain from 1998 to 2007. However, the response falls short of fully satisfying the criteria for higher bands. The overview is weak, and the interpretation of the data contains significant inaccuracies, such as the claim that 'in 2007 only fatal crimes were reported while rest remains zero,' which misinterprets the missing data in the table for 2006-2007. While some main features are identified (such as slight crimes being the most frequent and overall figures increasing), the ideas are under-developed and lack precise support from the figures provided. For these reasons, the response corresponds to Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The response lacks standard paragraphing, appearing as a single dense block of text, which severely limits its cohesion. There is no clear overall progression or logical structure guiding the reader through the data. Cohesive devices are used in a very limited and repetitive manner (e.g., 'similarly', 'in contrast to it', 'moreover'), and referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult to follow the relationships between ideas. Additionally, mechanical issues such as missing spaces after punctuation detract from the readability of the text. Based on these organizational and cohesive shortcomings, the writing fits the Band 4.0 descriptor.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.0
The lexical range is very limited and inadequate for a standard academic response. The student relies heavily on basic, repetitive vocabulary, frequently misusing words and collocations (e.g., 'crime report of great britain', 'takes growth', 'slight crimes were take highest percentage', 'slightly crimes obtains'). There are also persistent spelling errors and issues with capitalization (e.g., 'great britain', 'beacuse', 'signifcant', 'thats'). Word choices often cause difficulty for the reader in grasping the intended meaning. Consequently, this performance aligns with Band 4.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures. Most sentences are simple or attempt complex forms that are heavily flawed and ungrammatical (e.g., 'these crime results in fatal, serious and slight crime', 'All crimes gets growth from time to time'). Errors in punctuation, capitalization, and verb tenses are frequent throughout the text, distorting meaning and impeding the reader's comprehension at times. Due to the lack of control over basic syntax and frequent grammatical errors, the appropriate band score for this criterion is 4.0.
