Student answer (Band 6.0)

The data compares the severity of injury caused in incidents that were committed using gun and knife in Britain from 1998 to 2007.

Overall, the data shows three different severity injures(fatal, serious and slight), the total numbers incidents each year increased until 2005 and then experienced small decline afterwards. Every single injury category except Fatal underwent drastic increase over the time period.

Fatal injuries showed slight increase of 18% in almost a decade. Between 1998 to 1999 there were only 49 cases of fatal injuries that were increased to 58 at the end of period in 2007. Subsequently, serious injuries caused by gun and knife were at their lowest point (of 162 cases) from 1998 to 1999, over the period they grew drastically (by 194%) over the years and between 2005 and 2006 they were at their peak point (476 injuries).

Moreover, slight injuries and total number of cases surged exponentially over time, Slight injuries experienced growth of 405% from 1998 to 2007. In 1998 there were only 653 reported cases of slight injuries. In following years these incidents increased dramatically until they reach the highest point of 3296 cases between 2004 and 2005. The cases decreased to 3296 in a following year. Nonetheless same trend can be seen with total number of cases indicating multiple time growth of 342% from 864 the causes count increased to 3912 cases in [redacted phone].

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features, selecting appropriate data points, and making relevant comparisons across the categories of injury. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, outlining the overall trends (increasing numbers until 2005 followed by a slight decline, and the differing trajectories of fatal versus non-fatal injuries). Specific figures are cited accurately, such as the 18% increase for fatal injuries and the 405% increase for slight injuries. However, there is a minor misstatement in the body regarding the 2005-2006 slight injury figures ('The cases decreased to 3296 in a following year'), whereas the table shows 3296 for 2005-2006 and missing data for 2006-2007. Despite minor descriptive inaccuracies, the response fully satisfies the requirements of Task 1.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is clearly organised with a logical overall progression. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, overview, and specific body paragraphs detailing different injury types. Cohesive devices are employed with reasonable flexibility, such as 'Overall', 'Subsequently', and 'Moreover', though referencing is occasionally slightly clumsy (e.g., repeating the figure '3296' redundantly). Paragraph transitions work well to guide the reader through the data, ensuring the response hangs together cohesively despite minor mechanical quirks.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common and precise terms such as 'severity', 'drastically', 'surged exponentially', and 'peak point'. However, there are some word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'severity injures(fatal, serious and slight)', 'multiple time growth', and missing prepositions or articles. Despite these occasional errors and spelling slips (e.g., 'injures'), the vocabulary is adequate to convey the meaning clearly and flexibly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at relative clauses and participial phrases (e.g., 'incidents that were committed using gun and knife', 'indicating multiple time growth'). There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and voice ('that were increased to 58', 'until they reach the highest point', 'causes count'). Punctuation is occasionally erratic, with missing spaces after commas and brackets. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede overall communication.
