Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task well, providing an overview and selecting the main trends from the table. The student correctly notes that the overall figures generally increased over the decade and contrasts the trends across fatal, serious, and slight injury categories. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and misinterpretations in reading the data points. For instance, the text claims that serious and slight injuries were continuously increasing from 1998 to 2006, while the table shows fluctuations (e.g., serious injuries dipped from 416 in 2002-2003 to 411 in 2004-2005). Additionally, the mention of 'drastic increase around 99% for next year' at the end is confusing. Despite these minor data-handling errors, the main features are sufficiently reported, placing this at a Band 6.5 to 7.0 range.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay has a clear logical overall arrangement and attempts to organise information into paragraphs, starting with an introduction and overview, followed by body details. However, paragraphing is somewhat fragmented, with very short single-sentence paragraphs used in the opening. Cohesive devices are used, but sometimes mechanically or awkwardly, such as 'According to stats, It has been observed that...' and 'Furthermore, from 2002 to 2007, rate of fatal injuries steadily decrease...'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and transitions between ideas lack smoothness. Overall, the organizational structure is adequate for a Band 6.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with attempts to incorporate less common items and subject-specific terms such as 'assorted injuries', 'escalated growth', and 'lethal injured'. However, there are numerous word choice, form, and collocation errors that hinder precision, such as 'lethal injured' instead of 'fatally injured', 'serious injured' instead of 'seriously injured', and 'crime number' instead of 'crime rate' or 'number of crimes'. Words are also occasionally misused, such as 'symbolize' instead of 'indicate' or 'show'. While the range is sufficient to convey the general meaning, these persistent lexical inaccuracies restrict the score to Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and passive constructions like 'It has been observed that...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses, voice, and prepositions. Examples include 'between years of 1998 to 2007', 'the total number of injuries had been escalated', 'rate of fatal injuries steadily decrease' (tense agreement), and missing articles ('rate in other injuries'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur regularly throughout the response, preventing the essay from achieving a higher grammatical band.
