Overall, the total number of injuries rose considerably, increasing by 342%. Slight injuries accounted for the largest proportion of cases and experienced the greatest growth, while serious injuries also increased substantially. In contrast, fatal injuries fluctuated considerably and showed only a relatively small overall increase of 18%.
The number of fatal injuries initially rose from 49 in 1998–99 to a peak of 95 in 2001–02. It then fell to 68 the following year before fluctuating, ending at 58 in 2006–07. Serious injuries followed a generally upward trend, increasing from 162 to 476, although there were some fluctuations after 2001–02.
Slight injuries showed the most dramatic rise. They increased steadily from 653 in 1998–99 to 1,862 in 2003–04, before almost doubling to 3,424 in 2004–05. The figure reached a high of 3,821 in 2005–06, although it subsequently declined slightly to 3,296 in the final year.
