Student answer (Band 4.5)

The given image shows the number of death and serious injuries occurs due to serious crime from 1998 to 2007.

There are two tools used to attempt these injuries. From 1998 to 1999, the total number of people is 864 including death, serious, and slight injured.

Moreover, in 1999 till 2000 the number of fatal, serious, slight and total are increased from 1998 because there are more crime rate in 1999. In addition, from 2000 to 2001 its is slightly increased to almost 200. Till 2002 the number of fatal is rapidly increasing but in 2003 the number are starting decreasing. However, the number of serious, slight and total are increasing. From 1998 till 2005 the total crime rate is increasing but in 2007 the number of crime is slightly decreased. The percentage of slight is incread most from serious and fatal.

Police have controlled these crime from 2003 to 2004 and the death rate is slighty decreased.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response attempts to address the task by discussing some figures from the table, such as the total in 1998-1999 and general trends over the period. However, it fails to provide a clear, comprehensive overview of the main features and makes several inaccurate claims regarding the data. For instance, the student states that the total crime rate is increasing until 2005 but slightly decreases in 2007, whereas the table actually has missing data for 2006-2007. Furthermore, the analysis of specific injury categories lacks precision, and the explanation about police controlling crime is speculative and unsupported by the visual data. Overall, the task achievement is limited due to misread data and underdeveloped comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into short paragraphs, but the logical progression and overall arrangement are weak. While some basic cohesive devices are used, such as 'Moreover' and 'In addition', referencing and logical sequencing are often faulty. For example, sentences jump between different years without a clear structural narrative, making the progression difficult to follow. Paragraphing is attempted, but individual paragraphs are very brief and fail to develop coherent sub-themes related to the table.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The lexical range is limited and repetitive. The student uses basic vocabulary such as 'number', 'people', and 'crime' frequently. There are noticeable word choice errors and awkward collocations throughout the text, such as 'death and serious injuries occurs', 'slight injured', and 'crime rate' used to describe raw injury counts. Vocabulary errors occasionally impede smooth reading, and there is an absence of less common academic vocabulary suitable for Task 1 reports.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple sentences with frequent structural errors. Examples of grammatical inaccuracies include 'the number of fatal, serious, slight and total are increased', 'its is slightly increased', and 'the number are starting decreasing'. Subject-verb agreement errors and tense inconsistencies occur throughout the text. Complex sentence attempts are often faulty, and errors frequently cause difficulty for the reader.
